What is... a Workspace?
In Databricks, the terms "workspace," "user workspace," and "Unity Catalog workspace" refer to different aspects of the environment and data management:
- Databricks Workspace: This is a deployment of Databricks in the cloud that serves as an environment for teams to access and manage Databricks assets such as notebooks, clusters, and jobs. It is the primary interface where users interact with Databricks.
- User Workspace: This typically refers to the personal space within a Databricks workspace where individual users can create and manage their own notebooks, experiments, and other resources. It is a subset of the Databricks workspace, tailored for individual use.
- Unity Catalog Workspace: This is a workspace that has been enabled for Unity Catalog, which is a unified governance solution for all data and AI assets in Databricks. It allows for centralized data management, access control, and auditing across multiple Databricks workspaces. A Unity Catalog workspace can access shared data and manage it centrally through a Metastore.
Typically, when using the term "workspace", it will refer to the Databricks Workspace, which can be changed using the drop-down at the top right of the Databricks environment. If you cannot see the workspace which you require, this is likely because you don't have permissions to access that workspace.
